"'If there's specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can't change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies.'- Kathryn Bigelow, director of Near Dark"
Trailer for 'Silent Venom' - Sex and the single female Scientist
Clearly, I think we can all agree the greatest horror movie cliche ever created is the young, hot, sexy female scientist, aged 27 (who has been the best in her field for 25 years) who must join forces with the local sherrif/game warden/army captain to fight a vicious giant snake/reptile/sasquatch/gorgon before it destroys humanity. Need examples? Tara Reid as Aline Cedrac in Alone in the Dark (2005), Robin Riker as Marisa Kendall in Alligator (1980) and Saffron Burrows as Dr. Susan McCallister in Deep Blue Sea (1999). I could go on. But then I couldn't tell you about Krista Allen as Dr. Andrea Swanson, snake-studyer, in the new straight-to-DVD miracle Silent Venom about - you guessed it! - giant deadly scary snakes. watch the trailer...
Keep in mind, this is directed by genius Fred Olen Ray. Dr. Andrea Swanson (Krista Allen) has been studying a new breed of mutant snakes on a remote island in the Pacific. When tensions rise with the Chinese military, Adm. Bradley Wallace (Tom Berenger) quickly evacuates the island, but the only way home is on an old submarine on its final voyage to Taiwan, under the lead of Lt. Cmdr. James O’Neill (Luke Perry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). After a Chinese vessel attacks the sub, the crew begins to realize they’re not alone – someone has smuggled deadly mutant snakes on board and the hungry, vicious creatures stalk the crewmembers one-by-one. With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, O’Neill and Swanson must become unlikely allies in order to keep the deadly snakes at bay and survive, unaware that their biggest threat yet has to make its presence known.
Silent Venom is out June 2nd, 2009 and no doubt truly worth the $22.98 they'll be charging for it. However, should the economy be pinching your boyfriend's wallet, I suggest watching it on The Sci-Fi (excuse me, SyFy) channel in about two months in the USA.
